Integrated
Pest Management is the constant monitoring and collection
of data, which reveals the level of pest activity in
a structure. When pest activity monitoring reveals there
is an infestation or pest activity reaches the no tolerance
level, action must be implemented. The first methods
of control to be considered are non-chemical. Structural
modifications, sanitation conditions and changes in
habitation protocol are evaluated first. More then often,
changes in one of the above areas will control the infestation
without the use of pesticides. The precision application
of pesticides is the last resort when practicing IPM.
Monitoring must be defined. Monitoring and data collection
is accomplished through the use of different types of
pest traps and lures, accurate visual inspections and
personal interviews of the people who inhabit or constantly
visit the structure being monitored.
